THIS WEEK'S FILMS ON DVD

The Debt UK Certificate 15

Genre : Drama/Thriller

Directed by : John Madden

Starring : Helen Mirren/Sam Worthington/Jessica Chastain/Tom Wilkinson

The espionage thriller begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (Helen Mirren) and Stefan (Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds). All three have been venerated for decades by their country because of the mission that they undertook back in 1965, when the trio (portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Sam Worthington) tracked down Nazi war criminal Vogel (Jesper Christensen) in East Berlin. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team's mission was accomplished - or was it?

<><><>

A Strong storyline & good performances provides tension throughout..let down some what by a so-so ending..
Perhaps I am nit picking a bit on that...
I might add that this is a remake of the Israeli movie of the same name.

Whether you choose the original, which is in hebrew, or the remake is upto you.
Both are recommended.

7.5/10

Hostel Part 3 UK Certificate 18

Genre : Horror/Mystery/Thriller

Directed by : Scott Speigel

Starring : Kip Pardue/Brian Hallisay/John Hensley

While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town...

<><><>

Very poor third outing in this franchise....Nothing special & just does not come close to Eli Roth's first two.
In many ways the Storyline reminds me of the Asian Horror "Invitation Only" , remarkably similar, but alas not with the strong tension that had..

I just cannot recommend this film.....
Die hards might like it though.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy UK Certificate 15

Genre : Drama/Mystery/Thriller

Directed by : Tom Alfredson

Starring : Colin Firth/Tom Hardy/John Hurt

In the early 1970s during the Cold War, the head of British Intelligence, Control, resigns after an operation in Budapest, Hungary goes badly wrong. It transpires that Control believed one of four senior figures in the service was in fact a Russian agent - a mole - and the Hungary operation was an attempt to identify which of them it was. Smiley had been forced into retirement by the departure of Control, but is asked by a senior government figure to investigate a story told to him by a rogue agent, Ricky Tarr, that there was a mole. Smiley considers that the failure of the Hungary operation and the continuing success of Operation Witchcraft (an apparent source of significant Soviet intelligence) confirms this, and takes up the task of finding him. Through the efforts of Peter Guillam, Smiley obtains information that eventually leads him to Jim Prideaux, the agent at the heart of the Hungary fiasco. He is then able to put together the pieces of the puzzle, which lead him to the identity of the mole and the true intent of Operation Witchcraft.

<><><>

Slow burning, thoughtful & utterly absorbing Storyline...Superb Performances, especially from Oldman as Smiley....Great Direction compliments.
However if your looking for action then this may not be for you.

The Hunters

Well there is nothing new or particularly horrifying in this movie....Slow to start, but picks up midway....A sometimes confusing Storyline does not help the general maliase.

One for addicts of Horror.

5 Days of War UK Certificate 15

Genre : Action/Drama/War

Directed by : Renny Harlin

The War between Georgia and South Ossetia/Russia in August of 2008...
As a nation fights for its very survival, a brave and passionate coalition of international reporters and local Georgians risk their lives to tell the true human cost of military conflict...

<><><>

An average dramatisation of the conflict, but sometimes thought provoking movie..often brutal which is the way of war.
Average? yes.... the acting could have been better with less reliance on special effects.

Note: I make no comment about the proporganda this film allegedly makes of the sides in this war.

6.5/10

Hybrid aka Super Hybrid UK Certificate 15

Genre: Horror/Thriller

Directed by : Eric Valette

The on-call mechanics soon discover the car has a mind of its own, and a shape shifter. With hundreds of horsepower and two tons of reinforced steel at its command, it's a seemingly unstoppable killing machine capable of outrunning -- and outwitting -- humans.

<><><>

Well a B movie for sure..very average CGI, particularly the shape shifting monster....Still acting was ok considering the Storyline.
Steven King's Christine it is not.

One for monster addicts.

In Time
UK Certificate 12

Genre : Action/Sci-Fi/Thriller

Directed by : Andrew Niccol

Starring : Amanda Seyfried/Justin Timberlake

Welcome to a world where time has become the ultimate currency. You stop aging at 25, but there's a catch: you're genetically-engineered to live only one more year, unless you can buy your way out of it. The rich "earn" decades at a time (remaining at age 25), becoming essentially immortal, while the rest beg, borrow or steal enough hours to make it through the day. When a man from the wrong side of the tracks is falsely accused of murder, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful hostage. Living minute to minute, the duo's love becomes a powerful tool in their war against the system.

<><><>

A neat concept, but let down by an average Storyline...and I have to say the lead performances were less than engaging.
However worth a look.

6.5/10

Vanishing on 7th Street UK Certificate 15

Genre : Horror/Mystery/Thriller

Directed by : Brad Anderson

Starring : Hayden Christensen/Thandie Newton/John Leguizamo

When a massive power outage plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, a disparate group of individuals find themselves alone. The entire city's population has vanished into thin air, leaving behind heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. Soon the daylight begins to disappear completely, and as the survivors gather in an abandoned tavern, they realize the darkness is out to get them, and only their rapidly diminishing light sources can keep them safe.

<><><>

Well I thought a reasonable premise for a Storyline..but that was it....The movie seemed unfinished, the mystery remaining.
Good performances lifted a rather poorly scripted Story.

As a foot note I ask myself why this was given a 15 cert...12 would have sufficed.

Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes. Rallying a band of fellow outsiders-including visionary priestess Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and cunning slave Stavros (Stephen Dorff)-one hero will lead the uprising, or watch his homeland fall into ruin and his Gods vanish into legend....

Awsome visuals are let down by an average storyline...reasonable performances howerver, but this movie could have been a whole lot better, still worth a look.

The Three Musketeers UK Certificate 12

Genre : Action/Adventure/Romance

In no time, D'Artagnan manages to offend Athos, Porthos and Aramis on different occasions and challenges them all to duels. However before the duels can take place they are attacked by guards, trying to arrest them for illegal dueling. The ex-musketeers and D'Artagnan fight off the soldiers, leading to the four men becoming a band with the motto of "All for one, and one for all". Count Richelieu is not only determined to be rid of the musketeers, but also schemes with Athos' former lover Milady to undermine the reign of King Louis and his wife. The musketeers and D'Artagnan are determined to save the royal family and France itself.....

<><><>

Fun nonsense who's storyline has not much to do with the original book. Why we have had another iteration of The Musketeers is beyond me. Still is enjoyable...Anderson's wife Jovovich features to much I think...

Passable Entetainment.
