<><><>

Puting aside some historical inaccuracies this is excellent action packed movie..
Well acted with superb visual effects particularly in the sea battles.
The cinematography puts us right there in 17th Netherlands and is complimented by a good musical score.

Highly recommended

Starring : Tom Hardy/Gary Oldman/Noomi Rapace

<><><>

An idealistic pro-Stalin security officer decides to investigate a series of child murders in a country where supposedly this sort of crime doesn't exist. The state would not hear of the existence of a child murderer let alone a serial killer. He gets demoted and exiled but decides, with just the help of his wife, to continue pursuing the case.

<><><>

As you would expect good top draw performances in this drama in the Stalinist period of Russia.
Very atmospheric with some nice plot turns....Although not an accurate reflection of the book this did not distract.

Some might be critical of the players Russian accents, but I found them to be in keeping with the period.

Worth a watch

Monsters : Dark Continent

UK certificate 15
114 mins

Image

Genre : Drama/Sci-Fi/Thriller/War

Directed by : Tom Green

Starring : Jonny Harris/Sam Keeley/Joe Dempsie

<><><>

Seven years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have spread worldwide. Humans have been knocked off the top of the food chain, with disparate communities struggling for survival. American soldiers are being sent abroad to protect US interests from the Monsters, but the war is far from being won.

<><><>

Well this was more a war movie than anything to do with monsters, in fact they seemed to be a side issue.
Sadly it was not a great war film either....a sort of insurgency Iraq story line some of which was unbelievable...
That said, the special effects were good....
So not really one thing or the other....ohhh the trailer is somewhat misleading.

<><><>

Like all one setting films if they are not handled right as far as interest goes, then they tend to plod along at some point.
Sadly the middle part of film does just that ...I lost interest.
The performances were fine and what thrills there were, were well done.

6/10

Rise of the Krays
UK certificate 18
108 mins

Genre : Crime

Directed by : Zackary Adler

Starring : Kevin Leslie/Simon Cotton/Phil Dunster

<><><>

London, 1961: Ronnie and Reggie Kray begin a reign of terror that would endure and define London's East End for years to come. From protection rackets to members clubs, from brutal street brawls, arson via blackmail extending all the way up to the Cabinet Office, the Krays rained red on anyone who crossed them.

<><><>

I thought not another Krays film...Well this one disappointed, nowhere as good as the Kemps version...
Yes still bloody, nasty and unforgiving but average..
The film was made on a budget and it showed...Locations were not in keeping with the period...
The acting was average, and the storyline not particularly accurate.

Apparently there is a Film shortly to be released called "Legend" where Tom Hardy plays one of the Krays.
Wait for that, or watch the Kemps version "The Krays"

Over the top action and damn good fun !
Visual effects excel as do the performances... A knockout of a film in which action fans will like.

The Phoenix Incident

Directed by : Keith Arem

Starring : Troy Baker/Elise Muller/James C. Burns

<><><>

A number of 'missing person' cases are reported in Phoenix, Arizona when an unexplained light appears in the sky one night in 1997.

<><><>

As you all know I am not a fan of found footage films and there sometimes jerky camera work.
However I was interest in the subject of this film as I read about the incident and various theories as to what they were.
The film as one might expect dramatizes what is known and adds much which is just science fiction.
I guess one for those that like this kind of subject matter.

Robert Casey a retired US Intelligence agent turned UFO investigator races to discover the truth about the DOMINION and what it has in store for the human race but time is running out...

<><><>

Sadly the budget for the film was not in keeping with storyline.
As I have often said this genre at times requires high production values, this was one of those times but was missing.

An average film that could have been much better.....
The visual effects what there were of them were good.

Starship Deliverance, Worthy and his team are all that stand in the way of total slavery of the entire human race.

This is the sequel to Starship Rising and only marginally better.
A rather confusing storyline and average acting make for a less than enjoyable experience.

Image

Genre : Drama

Directed by : Michael Almereyda

Starring : Ed Harris/Ethan Hawke/Milla Jovovich

<><><>

War erupts between dirty cops and outlaw bikers as a drug kingpin (Ed Harris) tries to protect his empire.

<><><>

This is a film adaption of Shakespeare's work of the same name....and horrible it is.
The dialogue seems to be straight from the bard's period, so film audiences today may find it hard to follow.
To compound this the adaption is confusing...
The only redeeming feature is the music...

4/10

Escobar : Paradise Lost
UK certificate 15
120 mins

Image

Genre : Crime/Drama/Romance/Thriller

His life takes a dramatic turn after meeting El Patron, and Nick is forced into impossible situations to try and keep his family safe, but does Pablo have other ideas?

<><><>

A well acted movie with brutal overtones which is to be expected when story telling Escobar...
A man who was really evil, but convinced himself he was good.
A solid script entertains throughout, but be aware this is not a biopic of Escobar.
Worth a watch

A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

Not a patch on "The Thing"...Just a sort of 80's style horror...Cheesy, badly scripted and average performances.

Though apprenticed to an itinerant barber surgeon, it is the dazzling surgery of a Jewish physician trained by the legendary Persian physician Avicenna that inspires him to accept his gift and to commit his life to healing by studying at Avicenna's school.

<><><>

A good solid drama well performed and entertaining.
The historical aspect of the film is dramatized and as such does not reflect what really happened.

An entertaining fun action ride....Well acted with a reasonable storyline and plot.
Not a great deal of Sci-Fi and the character development was average.

That said worth a watch

This got mixed reviews..Personally I am not that keen on spoof spy movies...
Funny enough I guess with some decent action sequences...But that's it.

Not for everyone then

Same procedure as every year - except this time her illegally imported plant fertilizer seeps into the ground. Subsequently, a local species of killer wasps that usually lay their eggs into other insects mutates into 7 ft tall predators. And the celebrating upper class company provides just the right kind of prey.

Average comedy/horror which lacks humor and is not especially scary.
Special effects are not bad.

This is the journey of John and Colt, gunfighters and sometime lovers, on parallel but very different journeys through an underground dueling culture.

<><><>

I felt that this movie could have been a whole lot better....
The direction was well average and Rouke only had a cameo part or at least thats what it looked like.
Sadly I was not impressed by the storyline either.
The only highlight was Freida Pinto for obvious reasons lol

4.5/10

Cop Car

Image

Genre : Drama/Thriller

But things only get worse when the small town sheriff goes looking for his missing car. The kids find themselves in the center of a deadly game of cat and mouse they don't understand and the only way out is to go as fast as their cop car can take them.

<><><>

Not a bad film but somewhat patchy in pacing.....and does not thrill much till the last 30 minutes or so.
So not for all...

As Maggie's condition worsens and the authorities seek to eradicate those with the virus, Wade is pushed to the limits in an effort to protect her.

<><><>

Not your usual Schwarzenegger, a thoughtful performance from him in this emotional zombie movie
The cinematography was top draw which a helped an otherwise slow storyline.
I was split on this...I liked Schwarzenegger's performance but was not keen on the plot.

6/10

Slow West

A young Scottish man travels across America in pursuit of the woman he loves, attracting the attention of an outlaw who is willing to serve as a guide.

<><><>

Yes a slow paced film which in my opinion was just right.
Excellent performance from Fassbender and for once I can say the same for the rest of the cast.
Oddly this Film was shot in New Zealand...But I think it added to the period and Storyline.

So one for Western fans and all those that like a solid story.
