<><><>

Superman reborn... Cavill as superman does a damn good job in this very enjoyable movie...Stunning, yes awsome, CGI special effects compliment.
The storyline is good to.
Highly recommended

Only God Forgives

Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian(Gosling) killed a man and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When Julian's brother murders an underage prostitute, the police call on retired cop Chang - the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter's murderer, then 'restores order' by chopping off the man's right hand. Julian's mother Crystal - the head of a powerful criminal organization - arrives in Bangkok to collect her son's body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and 'raise hell'.

<><><>

An unusal approach to film these days, one of symbolism with little dialogue..I wondered about some of the acting which seemed to take there que from the camera, rather than the storyline. That is not surprises I guess.
The action scenes & torture are very brutal and bloody.

One for crime addicts & those that like something different in film style.

6/10

The Last Exorcism Part 2

UK certificate 18
86 mins

Image

Genre : Drama/Horror/Thriller

Directed by : Ed Gass-Donnelly

Starring : Ashley Bell/Julia Garner/Spencer Treat Clark

<><><>

Discovered alone in the backwoods of Louisiana, and with no memory of her past, a terrified Nell is offered sanctuary in New Orleans by a Christian group intent on purging the demons within her once and for all. But just as she begins the process of building a new life for herself, she discovers that the evil presence that tormented her past is back, and that this time, it's here to stay.

<><><>

Well this was a disappointing sequel....Slow with little to scare you....Just watch the first film not this.
I really don't know why they still bother with producing sequels which are poorly executed & written.
The actors did there best which was the only saving grace.

n the 1930s, an elderly Tonto tells a young boy the tale of John Reid, the Lone Ranger. However, John and Tonto learn that Cavendish is only part of a far greater injustice and the pair must fight it in an adventure that would make them a legend.

<><><>

This film had mixed reviews particularly by professional critics who paned it....Don't listen to um.
It is a fun movie with excellent action sequences and a good "tongue in cheek" performance by Depp as Tonto.
The Storyline compliments.

Genre : Action/Drama/Thriller

Directed by : Dolph Lundgren

A Moscow charity concert turns bloody when armed extortionists take the head liner American pop-star Venus and the Russian President with his family hostage. Help is on the way when the drummer of a heavy metal warm-up band, an ex-bad ass biker played by Lundgren, and a young Russian F.S.B. agent team up to fight back. But our two heroes are seriously outnumbered and things aren't as simple as they appear when old ghosts from the Soviet Union appear to haunt the present in this fast paced action piece.

<><><>

Yes an older movie but one I have recently seen and damn good it is to.
I think one of Lundgren's best.
Great action sequences & Storyline.
Action addicts will like this.

Thanatomorphose
UK certificate 18
100 mins

Image

Genre : Horror

Directed by : Eric Falardeau

Starring : Kayden Rose/Davyd Tousignant/Emile Beaudry

<><><>

Thanatomorphose is an hellenic word meaning the visible signs of an organism's decomposition caused by death.
Awakening after a night of rough sex to find her body covered in bruises, a young woman initially chalks these up to marks of passion. But as her isolated days go on and her body continues to deteriorate before her own eyes, her sanity begins to suffer. Consequently, she then turns against her loved ones and sexual partners as her flesh continues to rot...

<><><>

Oh dear me this is a gory film, and very slow as the decay.
There is virtually no dialogue or storyline.
You will either hate it or love it.
I think it is for those that like something a bit different in horror.

When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

This is a visually stunning treat, but the characterisation was lacking in my view..District 9 was better.

However the plan goes wrong since the clumsy amateurish trio is stupid and make a series of mistakes.

<><><>

This is a dramatisation of a true story...Yep comedy, but you may well need a bizarre sense of humour to appreciate...
Sometimes brutal with a decent storyline..perhaps a tad long for my tastes.
I think the film would have benefited from less comedy & more realism to at least bring it closer to what really happened.
That said it was enjoyable as entertainment and, oh yes good action sequences.

Re: FILMS on DVD Reviewed Part 2

Useful reviews, Torq, keep it up.
I'll throw in a few as well.

Cashback (2006)
Comedy | Drama | Romance
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cashback_%28film%29

Good humour combined with a thoughtful narrative. There are a few hilarious and well played roles. I have no idea how did they produce some of the scenes, it's quite unique I must say. Definately worth watching.

The bank job (2008)
Crime | Drama | Thriller
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bank_Job

I liked the story with all the twists. Compelling acting. Good movie.

Casualties of War (1989)
Drama | History | War
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_war

Vietnam war. This time it's not another of these movies where the US are the heroes saving the world from bad red villains. Recommended.

The Merchant of Venice (2004)
Drama | Romance
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mercha ... 04_film%29

Based on Sheakspeare's tragedy. Al Pacino as Shylock. Good acting, pleasant scenery. If you're into these times or you enjoy ye olde English Sheakspeare's dialogue - wait no longer and watch it.

Juno (2007)
Comedy | Drama | Romance
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_%28film%29

Ellen Page's big debut that gave her a lot of well deserved awards. Story, acting, humour all on a high level. Recommended.

The Tracey Fragments (2007)
Drama
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tracey ... %28film%29

That is an odd one. Very experimental editing, leaping in time, overall a very unique post-production. I dunno, it's weird, probably helps the viewer to empathise with a psychiatric. If it wasn't for Ellen Page, I'd have ditched it after a quarter. Eventually the story clarified and the movie didn't turn out to be that bad. If you want something unusual - watch this.

Superbad (2007)
Comedy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superbad_%28film%29

Geez, how much energy and humour is in this film... A funny comedy - made my day, highly recommended.

The Hurricane (1999)

That is quite a biography and a struggle to prove one's innocence in light of law. Set in US, based on "The Sixteenth Round". I thought it was gonna be dull but in the end of the day I found it a decent movie. Don't expect action or some fancy character arches, but it's still worth watching.

Whip it (2009)

Drama | Sport

Just watched. Entertaining, but I don't like the character arch. Everything comes too easy. I don't know why I expected a proper struggle or tough choices, but there's something missing in this movie.

Our War and Our War II (both series, since 2011)
If you're looking for a documentary about the British involvement in the Afghanistan war, look no further. Events recorded by the soldiers with helmet cams combined with interviews.
This is the first episode I saw and it got me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYvHiDMMtOw. The series and especially the aforementioned episode - recommended for people interested in military actions.

Riley Rewind (2013)
Drama | Sci-Fi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PevwW0v0uM

A five acts long movie (70mins altogether) directed by Ray William Johnson (yes, the guy from YouTube).
Very nice storyline, interesting post-production, suprisingly good acting. Worth watching.

THIS WEEK'S FILMS ON DVD REVIEWED

Captain Phillips
UK certificate 12
129 mins

Image

Genre : Biography/Drama/Thriller

Directed by : Paul Greengrass

Starring : Tom Hanks/Barkhad Abdi/Catherine Keener

<><><>

The Maersk Alabama became the first US cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years when heavily armed Somalis boarded the vessel on the 8th of April 2009. As commander of the ship, Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks) inevitably found himself at the heart of events. Held hostage by the pirates under the command of Muse (Barkhad Abdi), Phillips attempts to protect both his crew and ship to the best of his ability. However, as the drama plays out and Phillips spends more time in the company of his Somali captors, he gradually comes to realise that they have a story, too. Far from the greedy, heartless thugs of pirate lore, the Somalis may well represent the forces of globalisation as surely as the Maersk Alabama - the underside. With the stakes high, the crisis intensifies and someone will have to pay the price...

<><><>

Hanks excells, awsome performance......
A gripping, tense tale based on true events, with strong performances all round complimented by top draw direction & Storyline.

A must see movie

10/10

Force of Execution

Image

Genre : Action/Crime

Directed by : Keoni Waxman

Starring : Steven Seagal/Ving Rhames/Danny Trejo/Bren Foster

<><><>

Seagal stars as mob kingpin Mr. Alexander, an old-school boss who rules his criminal empire with both nobility and brutality. For a simple prison hit, he sends his best enforcer and protégé Roman Hurst (Foster). When the hit goes wrong, Hurst is forced to pay the price of his failure: banishment in the city that he almost once ruled. But a war is brewing for the soul of the city between Alexander, a cold-blooded gangster known as 'The Iceman" (Rhames) and a merciless Mexican cartel. Hurst, with the help of an ex-con restaurant owner (Trejo) who has a few hidden moves of his own, will rediscover his own will to survive the coming conflict and to wreak vengeance on those who have wronged him.

<><><>

Brutal, violent action well choreographed....Yep one for Action addicts & fans of Seagal...
The storyline was just average...but I thought it was entertaining at least.

Smart People (2008)
Comedy | Drama | Romance
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_People

First of all, great soundtrack. Interesting storyline, decent humour. Recommended.

Peacock (2010)
Drama | Thriller
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peacock_%282010_film%29

It's about multiple personality disorder where alterego takes over a man. In my view it's been a bit boring. Respect to Cillian Murphy for playing a man and a woman in one film.

Mouth To Mouth (2005)
Drama
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouth_to_M ... sh_film%29

A road movie with rebellious teenager. Not particularly interesting for me. I loved the accents though.

Vanishing Of The Bees (2009)
Documentary
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanishing_of_the_Bees

Clarifies a few things regarding the disapearance of bees in the US and Europe. So-so.

Hard Candy (2006)
Drama | Thriller
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Candy_%28film%29

Unpredictible storyline - that's for sure. The main female character is capable of a lot. Impressive acting made this a good thriller. Definiately worth watching.

Lawn Dogs (1997)
Drama
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawn_Dogs

Covers similar topics to the previous film. Throughout the whole movie you see that something is not right and bad things are gonna happen. The end is surprising. Good one.

Inception (2010)
Action | Adventure | Mystery
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inception

Everyone knows this film but still. Good script, good acting, pleasant CGI, awesome soundtrack. Recommended.

Well I enjoyed this...much mayhem...much blood & gore...many laughs on the way...a real comic book style treat.

An American Crime (2007)
Biography | Crime | Drama
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_American_Crime

Based on a true story and with testimony coming from the court transcripts. Set in US in '60s.
Even though they didn't fully stick to the story at the end, they found a good way to neatly show their interpretation.
Generally thoughtful and gripping - good one.

Ghost cat / Mrs. Ashboro's Cat (2003/2004)
Drama
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Cat

It's a TV film but a DVD was released as well.
A few cheesy solutuons as you would expect from a TV film. Not that bad.
