THIS WEEK'S FILMS ON DVD REVIEWED

Triple 9
UK certificate 15
112 mins

Image

Genre : Action/Crime/Drama/Thriller

Starring : Casey Affleck/Chiwetel Ejiofor/Kate Winslet

<><><>

A crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist. The only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for “officer down”. Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck, action-packed finale filled with double-crosses, greed and revenge.

<><><>

An entertaining gritty crime romp...with some moments of brutality...
But somehow a tad average which is a pity considering the star cast,

Performances were good...just that the pace and storyline were well lacking.

6.5/10

Kill Command
UK certificate 15
96 mins

Image

Genre : Action/Horror/Sci-Fi

Directed by : Steven Gomez

Starring : Thure Lindhardt/Vanessa Kirby/David Ajala

<><><>

In a near future, a technology-reliant society pits man against killing machines. Against this backdrop an elite army unit is helicoptered to a remote, off-the-grid island training facility. What starts out as a simple training exercise for Captain Bukes and his tight-knit unit, descends into a terrifying battle to the death, as the marines discover the island is overrun by an enemy that transcends the human concept of evil.

<><><>

Decent performances and visual effects...but an average storyline.
Like so many low budget films these days are let down in one way or other.
Nevertheless does entertain if you can forgive the slow pace.

5.5/10

1942 aka Back to 1942
UK certificate 15
140 mins

Image

Genre : Drama/War

Directed by : Xiaogang Feng

Starring : Adrien Brody/Tim Robbins/Fan Xu

<><><>

In 1942, Henan Province was devastated by the most tragic famine in modern Chinese history, resulting in the deaths of at least three million men, women and children. Although the primary cause of the famine was a severe drought, it was exacerbated by locusts, windstorms, earthquakes, epidemic disease and the corruption of the ruling Kuomintang government.

<><><>

If you are into Chinese history of this period and like good drama then this is for you.
Brody & Robbins play cameo parts but that's fine.

So not for everyone...

<><><>

Set in the Aokigahara Forest, a real-life place in Japan where people go to end their lives. Against this backdrop, a young American woman comes in search of her twin sister, who has mysteriously disappeared...

<><><>

Not particularly scary and you could hardly call it a horror movie.
Started well but got bogged down in a confused plot..
Average summer fare...

5/10

Mob Handed

<><><>

In a word or two...Brutal and bloody..The Storyline could have been improved on, but still ok.
I expected a bit more from the top actors...but was disappointed..
So entertaining but average...

5/10

Nomad The Beginning aka Alien Battlefield

As they struggle for their lives, John and Marianna discover that they are caught in the middle of a sinister extra-terrestrial plot.

<><><>

There is always a suspicion when a DVD title changes name and enhances the cover art.
And so it is here... This movie is dire boring nonsense far from a battlefield as you could get...
Poor special effects ..ohh need I say more
Anyway avoid

The Divergent Series: Allegiant
UK certificate 12
115 mins

Image

Genre : Action/Adventure/Mystery/Sci-Fi

Directed by : Robert Schwentke

Starring : Shailene Woodley/Theo James/Naomi Watts

<><><>

After the earth-shattering revelations of Insurgent, Tris must escape with Four and go beyond the wall enclosing Chicago.

<><><>

Third in the series and not as good...
The performances were fine, but I thought the storyline let that down.
Pity really since I think that this series has run its course....Wishful thinking there is another on the horizon.

The only saving grace was the special effects...

6/10

The Answer
UK certificate 15
79 mins

Image

Genre : Action/Sci-Fi/Thriller

Directed by : Iqbal Ahmed

Starring : Austin Hébert/Alexis Carra/David S. Lee

<><><>

After being attacked, an introverted young man must follow clues left by his dead parents in order to figure out who is after him - and who he really is.

<><><>

Once more good performances let down by a dull storyline
As I have said often enough Sci-Fi on a budget rarely works...

One for late night insomniacs.

4.5/10

The Asylum aka Backmask aka Exeter
UK certificate 18
88 mins

Image

Genre : Horror/Thriller

Directed by : Marcus Nispel

Starring : Stephen Lang/Gage Golightly/Brittany Curran

<><><>

A group of teenagers accidentally release an evil spirit that starts to possess them one by one.

<><><>

The bloody gory mess....many scenes reminiscent of other movies including the exorcist..
Performance were ok, but the teen bit in the storyline grated.

One for die hard horror fans.

I wonder why it changed its Title more than twice lol

Directed by : Babak Najafi

Starring : Gerard Butler/Aaron Eckhart/Morgan Freeman

<><><>

In London for the Prime Minister's funeral, Mike Banning discovers a plot to assassinate all the attending world leaders.

<><><>

This movie got panned by the critics but I enjoyed it for what it is...Action all the way.
Yep Storyline was average but that is not the point here....What is that it entertained.
Visual effects were good and fight scenes were well choreographed...

Check it out

6.5/10

The Asian Connection
UK certificate 15
88 mins

Image

Genre : Action

Directed by : Daniel Zirilli

Starring : Steven Seagal/Michael Jai White/Ron Smoorenburg

When Sam is killed, Jack turns to the love of his life, Pom, and the couple becomes a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde that takes the fight to the gang.

<><><>

Seagal must retire....This supposed action movie is less than average
Performances were say the least the same....
It grated and I lost interest

3.5/10

The Last Starship
UK certificate 15
107 mins

Image

Genre : Action/Sci-Fi

Directed by : Sven Knüppel

Starring : Jim Walker/Cecile Decker/Fabian Monasterios

<><><>

Conflict and tension looms heavily across the broken remains of a distant, post-apocalyptic world. Controlled by a race of oppressive genetically-enhanced humans, the last natural-born humans have no choice but to bow down to their rule. The only alternative is to wander the vast wastelands surrounding the last habitable city, whilst relentlessly hunted by roaming pack of mutated monsters. Meanwhile, outside the towering walls of the citadel, aboard a massive hulking army tank, an uprising occurs amongst the natural-born crew. Their hope lies in the legend of the Republic of EZO: said to return aboard the last starship....

<><><>

Ohhh dear .....What a dire movie...Disjointed storyline average performances....no space
I suppose there was a plot lurking somewhere waiting to be teased out....
Some of the special effects were from the fifties...others were fine

However avoid if you want to keep your sanity
The marks are for the brass neck of releasing the movie.

The Boy

97 mins

Image

Genre : Horror/Mystery/Thriller

Directed by : William Brent Bell

Starring : Lauren Cohan/Rupert Evans/James Russell

<><><>

A nanny, working for a family whose son has just passed away, finds herself put in charge of caring for a lifelike doll that the couple treat as a real child.

<><><>

A neat horror which could have been better...a slow in places and performances some what hit and miss except the lead.
The ending scene saved the day.

6.5/10

Even Lambs have Teeth
UK certificate 18
75 mins

Image

Genre : Thriller

Directed by : Tony Miles

Starring : Kirsten Prout/Tiera Skovbye/Michael Karl Richards

<><><>

Two young women terrorized by a group of small town psychos seek revenge on their tormentors.

<><><>

Thin plot does not make for a good film...and so it is here..
Budget was tight as most of the action scenes were faded out.
Performances were ok...
In my view watch "I Spit in your Grave" a much better movie.

5/10

The Witch
UK certificate 15
90 mins

Image

Genre : Horror/Mystery

Directed by : Robert Eggers

Starring : Bathsheba Garnett/Ralph Ineson/Kate Dickie

<><><>

New England in the 1630s: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life with five children, homesteading on the edge of an impassable wilderness. When their newborn son vanishes and crops fail, the family turns on one another. Beyond their worst fears, a supernatural evil lurks in the nearby wood.

<><><>

A psychological thriller and a good to...
Good performance makes the foreboding atmosphere far more intense.
Not a blood fest then...and what supernatural horror there was is kept in the back ground.

And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

<><><>

wow...Great visual effects, stunning cinematography and superb musical score.....
Sadly the films editors had there eye off the ball, slow start and some confusing moments.
Performances were as expected ...good
I am not sure fans of the hero's would like the storyline, but I enjoyed the movie for what it was...Entertaining.

7/10

<><><>

This movie was a surprise..shot from Henry's perspective so First Person like in games.
I am not normally a fan of shaky camera work but here it is just right
Much mayhem, blood and gore then...Entertaining yes...much fun.

7/10

First off the DVD cover art bares no relationship to the film...what a surprise.
The film it self was dire..bad editing, poor performances and on a budget visual effects.

Avoid
