THIS WEEK'S FILMS ON DVD REVIEWED

The Expendables UK Certificate 15

Genre: Action/Adventure/Thriller

Directed by : Sylvester Stallone

Starring : Sylvester Stallone/Jason Statham/Jet Li

Barney Ross leads the "Expendables", a band of highly skilled mercenaries including knife enthusiast Lee Christmas, martial arts expert Yin Yang, heavy weapons specialist Hale Caesar, demolitionist Toll Road and loose-cannon sniper Gunner Jensen. When the group is commissioned by the mysterious Mr. Church to assassinate the merciless dictator of a small South American island, Barney and Lee head to the remote locale to scout out their opposition. Once there, they meet with local rebel Sandra and discover the true nature of the conflict engulfing the city. When they escape the island and Sandra stays behind, Ross must choose to either walk away and save his own life - or attempt a suicidal rescue mission that might just save his soul.....

<><><>

Completely over the top actioner...and barely a storyline.....The set peice action sequences are good however, if only Stallone had introduced the hard hitting story that was evident in the remake of Rambo, then this Film would have been all the better...

As it is only for die hard action fans..

6/10

Death Race 2 UK Certificate 18

Genre : Action/Sci-Fi/Thriller

Directed by : Roel Reine

Starring : Luke Coss/Ving Rhames/Danny Trejo/Sean Bean

Race to the Death....The most evil reality TV show on Earth.

<><><>

Second outing..all action and thrills...Less engrossing than the first but still Entertaining for those that like there Sci-Fi with plenty of Action.

6/10

Piranha 3D UK Certificate 18

Genre: Horror/Thriller

Directed by : Alexandre Aja

Starring : Richard Dreyfuss/Ving Rhames/Elizabeth Shue

Special Note :DVD comes with both 2D & 3D features.

Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there's something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the areas new razor-toothed residents.....

<><><>

Oh dear...A film which I find hard to recommend in any sense even for Horror Fans. The Special effects were surreal & at times you wonder what was the point...scenes like ripped off genitals floating in the lake.
Aja is a good Director, but why did he bother with this tripe.

<><><>

Fourth outing in the franchise and not the best..Very average Storyline with a patchwork of action sequences and Direction that has seen better days...rather a let down..
One redeaming feature is the Music by Tomandandy..rather good.

Still I guess die hard horror/sci-fi addicts may like it

5/10

F UK Certificate 18

Genre : Horror/Thriller

<><><>

Well another very average Horror treading a familiar road that I guess most of us have been down many times.
There are some gripping moments, not many, and the climax ...well there is'nt one.

Only for die hard horror fans I think..

THIS WEEK'S FILMS ON DVD REVIEWED

The Girl Who Played With Fire UK Certificate 15

Genre : Crime/Mystery/Thriller

Directed by : Daniel Alfredson

Starring : Michael Nyqvist/Noomi Rapace/Lena Andre

Special Note : Swedish Language Film with English sub-titles

After spending a year abroad, Lisbeth Salander returns to Sweden. She calls on her court-appointed guardian to remind him, in her own way, of his promise to submit satisfactory reports on her behavior. Mikael Blomkvist continues as an editor of Millenium magazine and they are onto a major story about prostitution and trafficking in women from Eastern Europe. When the investigative journalist working on that story is killed, the police announce that Lisbeth is their prime suspect. Lisbeth and Mikael work independently trying to find who is behind the murders. They not only learn the identity of the culprits but also some of Lisbeth's family secrets.....

<><><>

Dose'nt have the spark of the first movie and some of the photography is a let down, but nonetheless has a gripping storyline, electric performances and a scathing portrayal of social exploitation. This makes for a very engrossing movie.
Must see in my view

Highly Recommended

9/10

Bonded by Blood UK Certificate 18

Genre : Crime/Drama/Thriller

Directed by : Sacha Bennett

Starring : Vincent Regan/Tamer Hassan/Dave Legeno

In 1995, drug suppliers and career criminals Tony Tucker, Patrick Tate and Craig Rolfe were blasted to death by a shot gun whilst waiting in a Range Rover in Rettendon, Essex. The film charts their rise to become the most prolific dealers and feared criminals in the south of England, maintaining the hold on their empire with fear and violence until their untimely death....

<><><>

Not a bad effort portaying the Gangsters of the period, ruthless, bloody times....Often bleak & impersonal & to my mind not as good as The Rise of the FootSoldier...

Still, Worth a watch

6/10

WARNING : The Trailer contains explicit language & nudity

With no way to escape, the horrific truth dawns that one of them is the Devil … and only then do they realise that very bad things happen for very good reasons....

<><><>

An average Horror Film which produces little in the way of thrills....However the performances are good which does help a Storyline which could have been better.

6/10

Mirrors 2 UK Certificate 18

Genre : Horror/Mystery/Thriller

Directed by : Victor Garcia

Starring :Nick Stahl/Emmanuella Vaugier/Evan Jones

The spirit of a young murder victim escapes into the realm of MIRRORS at the moment of death, and seeks vengeance against those responsible for killing her....

<><><>

This is a sequel to Alexendre Aja's Mirrors and not nearly as good. An average film & storyline, lifted only by some good special effects...
Could have been oh so much better.

Oustanding Performances, top draw Directing makes for an unforgettable ride in this action crime movie. Afflect has improved no end...Great...Superb Storyline and gripping action sequences compliments.

Mindflesh UK Certificate 18

Genre :Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller

The trauma has made him a portal for obsessions to pass from the mind to the physical world and hence disrupt the world's multiple planes of reality. Extraterrestrials that police the universe threaten to kill Chris' friends unless he conquers his past...

<><><>

Not what it seems....A strange Storyline is lifted by some good performances....Much Sex & Violence with a outworldly feel...A neat well rounded, odd at times, surreal kind of experience.
Difficult in many ways to catorgorise this movie, but I guess Sci-Fi/Horror fans will like it.

Recommended

Note that the Official Trailer was highly censored by Youtube...
This is a short sanitised version.

I Spit On Your Grave UK Certificate 18

Genre : Crime/Horror/Thriller

Directed by : Steven Monroe

Starring : Sarah Butler/Jeff Branson/Andrew Howard

In order to seek inspiration for her next book, urbanite author Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler) retreats to a secluded cabin in the woods. Little does Jennifer realize that she's just caught the attention of some particularly depraved locals, and her peaceful retreat is about to become a living hell. At first the sadistic intruders attempt to frighten Jennifer by breaking into her cabin, but then the attack gets out of hand. Desperate to escape after being badly brutalized, Jennifer throws herself into the river and allows her body to be carried away by the rapids. When her attackers fail to locate her corpse, they assume she is dead and return to their normal lives. But Jennifer isn't dead, and she doesn't forgive. Her attackers will pay for what they did, and nothing they say or do can prevent her from savaging them in the worst way imaginable before she sends them to hell screaming......

<><><>

This is a remake of the 1978 version & in my view a lot better. The Film is shocking, extremely brutal horror with a riveting storyline, especially in the second half of the movie....excellent performances draw you into the revenge nightmare.
Make no mistake some of the revenge sequences are gut wrenching.....
Do I recommend this? Certainly, particularly Horror/Crime fans.

7/10

The Reef UK Certificate 15

Genre : Drama/Horror/Thriller

Starring : Damien Walshe-Howling/Gyton Grantley/Adrienne Pickering

Luke advises that they should swim in the north direction to reach the Turtle Island, in Queensland, Australia, while they have strength since there is a current moving the boat in the opposite direction of land but Warren prefers to stay on the hull waiting for help since there are sharks in the water. The quartet swims, but they are hunted by a great white shark....

<><><>

This Film reminds me of "Open Water" another shark horror. However there the similarity ends.
I did not find this anywhere as ingrossing, nor did the so called shocks..ummm Shock. Not a bad storyline but it could have been a whole lot better...
