ANOTHER REVIEW

Tunnel Rats UK Certificate 18

Genre : War

Directed by : Uwe Boll

Vietnam 1968. Desperate to deal with the Vietcong's resistace in endless networks of tunnels the US Army creates a specialised unit trained in underground warfare. Armed with only handguns, flash lights & knives, this elite band of men are known as Tunnel Rats........Following an ambush on his platoon, Sgt Vic Hollowborn sends his men underground to flush out the enemy. But as they blindly crawl through these darkened passageways littered with spikes, drowning pools & homemade mines they soon realise that there mission is near impossible........................

This is a very hard hitting war film with good acting performances & a gripping Storyline..Perhaps the characterisation is not as engaging as Platoon...But still brings into focus the nastyness & claustrophobia of this kind of warfare & the men who had to fight it.

9/10

ANOTHER REVIEW

3-10 to Yuma UK Certificate 15

Genre : Western

Directed by : James Mangold

In Arizona in the late 1800's infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) plagues the Southern Railroad. When Wade is captured, injured Civil War veteran Dan Evans (Christian Bale) struggling to survive on his drought plagued ranch & desperate for money...volunteers to escort him to Yuma.......The mission soon becomes a violent dangerous journey.

I am not usually a Western fan, however I found this film to be both gripping in storyline & good performances by all concerned. Well worth a look.

ANOTHER REVIEW

Seraphim Falls UK Certificate 15

Genre : Western

Directed by : David von Ancken

The Civil War has ended but Colonel Morsman Carver ( Liam Neeson) is on one final mission : to kill Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) no matter what it takes. Launched by a gunshot & propelled by rage, the relentless pursuit takes them both far from the comforts & codes of civilisation.........

Gritty Western well acted with a gripping storyline, well worth a look.

ANOTHER REVIEW

Steel Trap UK Certificate 18

Genre : Horror

Directed by : Luis Camara

Seven adventurous partgoers find themselves trapped in a sadistic game of death after accepting an invitation to a mystrerious party........It's New Years eve....and an abandoned skyscaper where five guests & two gate crashes to the roof top party are invited to an exclusive VIP party a few floors below......................They quickly realize that they have fallen into a trap and a deadly game......

Reasonable acting in a so so horror, little in the way of outright shocks since you get the feeling that it has been done better elsewhere.....

A film for Horror fans & perhaps for just a rainy day only.

  (out of five)

This is a Film revisited....

We Were Soldiers UK Certificate 15

Genre : War

Directed by : Randall Wallace

On Sunday November 14, 1965 at 10.48 am, Lt.Col. Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) and his regiment of 400 men touch down at landing zone X-ray in the La Drang Valley, a place in Vietnam known as "The Valley of Death". They find themselves surrounded by roughly 2000 North Vietnamese soldiers and the ensuing battle becomes one of the most savage in US History............

What can one say.....Mel Gibson at his superlative best...
Magical performances by all... bringing home the futilty of war, the courage & emotions of those that had to fight, but above all the bonds between family that makes us what we are.

A truely epic film....superb.

Passchendaele

Set during the height of the First World War, Passchendaele tells the story of Sergeant Michael Dunne (Paul Gross), a soldier who is brutally wounded in France and returns to Calgary emotionally and physically scarred. While in the military hospital in Calgary, he meets Sarah (Caroline Dhavernas), a mysterious and attractive nurse with whom he develops a passionate love. When Sarah's younger asthmatic brother David (Joe Dinicol) signs up to fight in Europe, Michael feels compelled to return to Europe to protect him. Michael and David, like thousands of Canadians, are sent to fight in the third battle of Ypres, a battle against impossible odds, commonly known as "Passchendaele". It is a story of passion, courage and dedication, showing the heroism of those that fought in battle, and of the ones that loved.

My comment: A great film that brings the brutality of the Great War to the forefront. The story gets a little lovey dovey at the halfway mark but the battle scenes are truely disturbing!
A very, very good effort imho!

Hamburger Hill UK Certificate 18

20th Anniversary DVD Edition.

Genre : War

Directed by : John Irvin

The men of Bravo Company are facing a battle thats all uphill....up Hamburger Hill. Fourteen war-weary soldiers are battling for a mud-covered mound of earth so named because it chews up soldiers like chopped meat...They are fighting for their country, their fellow soldiers & their lives.....................

An epic portrayal of the nastiness of war....Superb characterisation & acting brings to life vividly the times....If you have not seen this film then I would strongly recommend doing so.
