Spartacus Season One : Blood & Sand
UK Certificate 18

Genre : Action/Drama/History

Directed by : Michael Hurst/Rick Jacobson/Jesse Warn

Starring : Andy Whitfield/John Hannah/Lucy Lawless

Betrayed by his country. Beaten into slavery. Reborn as a warrior. Spartacus: Blood and Sand is a graphic and visceral account of Romes most famous gladiator. When he is separated from the love of his life, Spartacus is forced into the gruesome and bloodthirsty arena, where a grisly death is primetime entertainment. Spartacus must fight for survival, befriend his enemies and play politics in this new world of corruption, violence, sex and fame. He will be seduced by power and tormented by vengeance. But his passion will give him the strength to prevail over every obstacle, in this modern and uninhibited tale of death, honour and endurance. ...

<><><>

This is a Stunning portrayal of the Times.......Extremely Violent, Very Bloody combat which was the Gladitorial stage...
Explicit Sex, Full frontal nudity & Orgies abound, as does Political corruption.....
Make no mistake this series does not pull any punches, some scenes will sicken you others make you winch, neverthe less they are in keeping with what we know of the Period.
Entertaining...most certainly...Atmospheric..Yes
My only criticism is that the Blood effects sometimes go way over the top, as does the Slow motion action..

So be warned this Series is not for the faint hearted, nor those that will be offended by the sexual content.

9/10

Music from the Series :

Black Swan UK Certificate 15

Genre : Drama/Mystery/Thriller

Directed By : Darren Aronofsky

Starring : Natalie Portman/Mila Kunis/Vincent Cassel

Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.....

<><><>

Easily Aronofsky's best to date...The Director of Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain & The Wrestler.
Superb performance by Portman compliments a gripping Storyline..a Psychological Thriller that at times is harrowing highly entertaining and thought provoking.
Even if you don't like Aronofsky's upfront full on direction, you will like this.

Highly Recommended

I really tried to get into this Film, but failed ....I found it somewhat boring and a rather convoluted Storyline...Even so there were reasonable performances & some gory moments...

This film reminds me of shocks that are created by good direction, & editing, other than out right gore. A neat Horror then, well acted with a reasonable Storyline & as I said with scary moments.

Worth a look...

The Mechanic UK Certificate 15

Genre : Action/Crime/Thriller

Directed by : Simon West

Starring : Jason Statham/Ben Foster

Assassin Arthur Bishop is an artist at his craft; he can make any job seem like natural causes or an accident if necessary. He has learned to stay detached. But when he is told to kill his friend, Harry, it's hard for him but he does it anyway. He makes it seem like a car jacking. Harry's son Steve so despondent over his father's death sets out to go after every carjacker he can find. But when he gets over his head, Arthur saves him. Arthur then decides to make Steve his apprentice. And while Steve is not as refined as Arthur, they continue with their collaboration. Arthur later learns that the circumstances surrounding Harry's hit is not what he was told...

<><><>

A remake of the 1972 Bronson Film...and does not come up to the mark of the original.
Decent action sequences help lift an otherwise average storyline..the ending is different which gives one to believe that there maybe a sequel.

One for Action addicts i think.

Red Hill UK Certificate 15

Genre : Crime/Thriller

Directed by : Patrick Hughes

Starring : Ryan Kwanten/Steve Bisley/Tom Lewis/Claire van der Bloom

Young police officer Shane Cooper (Ryan Kwanten) relocates to the small country town of Red Hill with his pregnant wife Alice (Claire van der Boom) to start a family. But when news of a prison break sends the local law enforcement officers - led by the town's ruling presence, Old Bill (Steve Bisley) - into a panic, Shane's first day on duty rapidly turns into a nightmare.
Enter Jimmy Conway (Tommy Lewis), a convicted murderer serving life behind bars, who has returned to the isolated outpost seeking revenge. Now caught in the middle of what will become a terrifying and bloody confrontation, Shane will be forced to take the law into his own hands if he is to survive.

<><><>

This movie tries to be the Australian "No Country For Old Men", but in my view did not have the intensity and suspense.
That said it is a reasonable Crime thriller, the so called Aussie Western. Performances are good as is the Direction and is complimented by an above average music score.

True Grit UK Certificate 15

Genre : Adventure/Western

Directed by : Coen Brothers

Starring : Jeff Bridges/Matt Damon/Hailee Steinfeld

Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested....

<><><>

A remake of the John Wayne 1969 classic ... Try as i might to like Bridge's version of "Rooster Cockburn" it some how did not have the style of Wayne's performance.
Nevertheless I don't think a comparison is necessary as both versions have there merits.

The acting here was superb, the Storyline although similar stood on its own, and all this complimented by stunning visuals.
Harder hiting than the original...and a more invovled character interaction with some powerfull performances, particularly Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross..

Highly Recommended.

Sanctum UK Certificate 15

Master diver Frank McGuire has explored the South Pacific's Esa-ala Caves for months. With dwindling supplies, the crew must navigate an underwater labyrinth to make it out. Soon, they are confronted with the unavoidable question: Can they survive, or will they be trapped forever?

I enjoyed this movie for what it was...A drama about caving ...No creatures which made a change.
Just simply a team trying to escape there predicament & find an exit.
Average Storyline lifted by good performances and yes stunning special effects & visuals.

Battle : Los Angeles UK Certificate 12

Genre : Action/Sci-Fi

Directed by : Jonathan Liebesman

Starring : Aaron Eckhart/Michelle Rodriguez/Ramon Rodriguez

Los Angeles and other cities around the world are being bombarded by meteors that seem to be slowing down once they hit the earth's atmosphere. The earth is suddenly being invaded by space aliens that have landed off the shore of LA, and who begin killing everybody along the beach. The military is ordered into action. Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by a new 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone....

<><><>

A decent Sci-Fi actioner with reasonable storyline, although somewhat familiar.
The Special effects and Musical score were good and complimented the performances. This movie should not be confused with "Battle for Los Angeles" of similar name which was complete drivel.
That said this film could have been much better, District 9 it is not...

Ironclad UK Certificate 18

Genre : Action/Adventure/History

Directed by : Jonathan English

Starring : James Purefoy/Brian Cox/Derek Jacobi/Kate Mara

It is the year 1215 and the rebel barons of England have forced their despised King John to put his royal seal to the Magna Carta, a noble, seminal document that upheld the rights of free-men. Yet within months of pledging himself to the great charter, the King reneged on his word and assembled a mercenary army on the south coast of England with the intention of bringing the barons and the country back under his tyrannical rule. Barring his way stood the mighty Rochester castle, a place that would become the symbol of the rebel's momentous struggle for justice and freedom...

<><><>

I enjoyed this movie..It is realistic of the times, bloody battle scences.. and dark brooding landscapes which compliment the performances. Don't expect historical accuracy but instead take this film for what it is.
And yes a decent musical score.
One point however was the choice of Film Title..somewhat odd I think...It evokes thoughts of Battleships instead of Knight's Templar.
