Genre : Adventure/Biography/Drama

Directed by : John Curran

Starring : Mia Wasikowska/Adam Driver

<><><>

Feeling estranged from the Australian urban culture, Robyn Davidson (Wasikowska) embarks on a trek over the harsh and arid landscape of the outback from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean.
Accompanied only by four camels and her dog, she meets a number of people along the way including Mr. Eddy , an Aboriginal man who imparts some important local wisdom to her, and Rick Smolan (Adam Driver), an ambitious National Geographic photographer who is asked to document her journey for the magazine...

<><><>

Based on a true story....
I don't normally watch this kind of film, but I am glad I did.
Outstanding cinematography brings to life in sometimes harsh reality the Australian outback.
So much so that you can almost feel the siring heat ...
Wasikowska performance as Robyn Davidson is top draw and compliments well the theme.

Highly Recommended

Genre : Drama/Mystery/Sci-Fi/Thriller

Directed by : Wally Pfister

Starring : Johnny Depp/Rebecca Hall/Paul Bettany

<><><>

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed-to be a participant in his own transcendence.

<><><>

Well I was disapponted with this film... Perhaps I expected to much.
On the surface a neat Sci-Fi Storyline ...but underdeveloped..
I felt that Depp was miscast in the role of Will Caster..
The special effects were good and in keeping with the theme..

One for Sci-Fi addicts me thinks

Starring : Jonathon Lamer/Beth Pennington/Tom Virtue

<><><>

After losing their son, grieving parents stumble upon a network of people that collect souls of the deceased, preparing them for their journey out of Purgatory...

<><><>

Dire nonsense by beginners...
Reminded me of the B Movies of earlier times.
The cover art for the DVD does not bare any relationship to the film.
Nothing new there then..

Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro, emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

<><><>

My least favorite character from the Marvel Studios..a tad silly & least engaging.
That said performances were good and the special effects were awsome..
If you liked the first outing then you will like this...

6.5/10

A Good Man
UK certificate 15
98 mins

Image

Genre : Action

Directed by : Keoni Waxman

Starring : Steven Seagal/Victor Webster/Tai Ma

<><><>

When notorious special ops soldier Alexander (Seagal) loses a Chinese target in a botched mission, he decides to quit the business and try to lead a normal life, going off the grid and finding work as a handyman. When one of his clients gets caught up with an infamous Russian gangster Alexander vows to protect them at all costs. As he realises that he has entered into the middle of a war between rival Russian and Chinese gangs, he sees his opportunity to finally bring his once lost target to justice.

<><><>

The usual action from Seagal that we all have become familiar with...
Not bad, but getting a bit tired where the storyline is concerned.
Die hard Seagal fans will like this...

5.5/10

Pioneer

Genre : Action/Suspense/Thriller

Directed by : Erik Skjoldbjærg

Starring : Aksel Hennie/Wes Bentley/Stephen Lang

Special Note : This is a Norwegian language film with English sub-titles.

<><><>

Enormous oil and gas deposits are discovered in the North Sea and the authorities aim to bring the oil ashore through a pipeline from depths of 500 meters. A professional diver, Petter, obsessed with reaching the bottom of the Norwegian Sea has the discipline, strength and courage to take on the world's most dangerous mission. But a sudden, tragic accident changes everything. Petter is sent on a perilous journey where he loses sight of who's pulling the strings. Gradually he realizes that he is in way over his head and that his life is at stake.

<><><>

A neat political deep sea thriller that delivers enough suspense to keep you interested.
To my mind it tries to do to many things at once and in doing so looses some objectivity.

That said... give it a try ...

Without tanks or air support, Merrimette and his team will need all the courage and firepower they can muster to fight their way across the war-torn country and shepherd the woman to safety.

Not like the first at all, this outing is tense, suspenseful and with good action sequences.
Performances match.
Worth a watch.

Image

Genre : Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi

Directed by : David Rebordão

Starring : Rutger Hauer/Alix Wilton Regan/Chris Tashima

<><><>

In a future not too far away, Steve Battier, an elderly, terminally ill multi-millionaire, accepts the offer of a company - RPG - that in exchange for a high monetary sum, provides a very select group of clientèle the chance to be young again. But what we may have experienced is not always what appears to be.

<><><>

Sadly a wasted opportunity..Poor storyline, some stilted acting and very average production values.
Pity the idea was a good one...so for Sci-Fi nuts only me thinks.

As Mount Vesuvius erupts in a torrent of blazing lava, Milo must fight his way out of the arena in order to save his beloved as the once magnificent Pompeii crumbles around him....

<><><>

An entertaining film let down by average dialogue & somewhat dull romance....
The CGI effects are good as is the musical score and I must admit I enjoyed the experience.
Action sequences compliment.

The end scenes, the music of which I have included below, were poignant and magical.

I haven't got much to say about this one, I find it forgettable. I'm not saying it was awful but it just didn't set itself apart in any special way. The plot started off slowly and it stayed slow-paced for the most part, except for a couple of breakthrough moment. One thing I can give them credit for is make-up. It felt realistic and complemented the atmosphere greatly.

Hancock (2008)
Action | Fantasy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hancock_%28film%29
Image

It's gotta be said, Hancock was a surprise to me. I expected it to be full of mindless fighting with a charismatic protagonist but I was wrong as it turned out to be a gripping film with a decent storyline. At the beginning it did feel like a cliche superhero film but then it kept on surprising. The plot was getting deeper and deeper, more than you would've expected. Special effects were okay. Performances - magnificent. Recommended.

Casino Royale (2006)
Action | Adventure | Thriller
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_Ro ... 06_film%29
Image

I remember old James Bond films (who doesn't) with those fighting scenes that always gave me the giggles. In Casino Royale, the original Bond films style had been adapted and slightly enchanced with recent trends in cinematography. And it was smashing - I look at it and I see a typical and enjoyable 007 film. As you would imagine, it's full of action scenes and complemented with good orchestral music. If you aren't fond of Bond films, it probably won't change your mind but still, it's worth watching.

Brick Mansions
UK certificate 15
87 mins

Image

Genre : Action/Crime/Drama

Directed by : Camille Delamarre

Starring : Paul Walker/David Belle/RZA

<><><>

In the criminal underworld of Detroit, the streets are overrun with violence and drugs and the hand of corruption reaches into the lives of everyone; well almost everyone. For Lino (David Belle) every day is a fight to live an honest life. But when a drug lord kidnaps his girlfriend, Lino is forced to team up with Damien Collier (Paul Walker), an undercover cop who’s been tracking this king pin's involvement in something even more sinister – a plot to devastate the entire city. Together they uncover a trail of corruption that leads all the way to the top.

<><><>

Paul Walker doing what he does best...all action.
However the film was not as good as the original French version District B13....let down a bit by the storyline, notably the ending which was different.
That said it is worth a watch...

6.5/10

Taking the law into his own hands Charlie meets up with former acquaintances ready to settle old scores and save his last remaining nephew Frankie the last of the Thompson bloodline. However, Charlie has been out the game for a while and he soon realizes that a lot has changed.

<><><>

Brutal this is, but not as good as Full English Breakfast & Day of Violence.
Less engaging characters & somewhat stilted performances lets this down.
Still not a bad effort...and what a title for a film lol

A news-team trails a man as he travels to an undisclosed location to find his missing sister. Upon entering "Eden Parish" and meeting the community's leader, it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems.

<><><>

I am not a fan of Found Footage movies..To my mind it is a lazy way of portraying a story and I just hate the shaky camera style.
A mixed storyline part dramatization, and part reflecting the real life event of the Jonestown massacre.
So a tad average.

300 : Rise of an Empire
UK certificate 15
98 mins

Image

Genre : Action/Drama/Fantasy/War

Directed by : Noam Murro

Starring : Sullivan Stapleton/Eva Green/Lena Headley

<><><>

After its victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.

<><><>

Oh dear...no where as good as the first outing....average storyine which bore little if any reality to what actually happened.
Lena headley's performance was poor, she gave the impression of being bored...
The final insult was the concluding music as the credits rolled....completely out of place 21st century garbage.

That said the special effects were good, CGI was excellent, and the battle scenes seemed to have been copied from Spartacus with slow motion Bloody fights.
So not a complete failure,,

Image

Genre : Crime/Drama/Thriller

Directed by : Guillaume Canet

Starring : Clive Owen/Billy Crudup/Marion Cotillard

<><><>

New York, 1974. Fifty-year-old Chris (Clive Owen) has just been released on good behavior after several years in prison following a gangland murder. Reluctantly waiting for him outside the gates is his younger brother, Frank (Billy Crudup), a cop with a bright future. Chris and Frank have always been different, and their father, Leon (James Caan), who raised them alone, seems to favor Chris despite all his troubles. Yet blood ties are the ones that bind, and Frank, hoping that his brother has changed, is willing to give him a chance - he shares his home, finds him a job, and helps him reconnect with his children and his ex-wife, Monica (Marion Cotillard). But Chris' inevitable descent back into a life of crime proves to be the last in a long line of betrayals, and after his brother's latest transgressions, Frank banishes him from his life. But it's already too late, as the brothers' destiny is bound together, forever.

<><><>

Nearly a classic..Based on character development, with above average performances and a storyline that gives a great feel to the 1970s...
If you like solid drama with a few action spots then this is for you...
However it is let down somewhat with the thought that certain parts of the storyline were fillers....
That said Crime drama nuts will like it.

<><><>

Another sequel...and a rather average outing...yep much blood & brutality, but that is it.

He holds a number of people hostage and uses his captives as his political platform to spread his message and awaken humanity. It's time to destroy the system, and change won't happen peacefully.

<><><>

Movie about a message, anti-establishment......Brutal & bloody....
The storyline is just that, putting the message across...as far as the action is concerned the first film was better.
There are no surprises on the violence handed out much the same as before.
However not a bad effort by Boll.

Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an alpha alien down with him. But he awakens back at the beginning of the same day and is forced to fight and die again... and again - as physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop...

<><><>

Interesting concept on time loops....
As one might expect awesome special effects and Cruise at his best..
However I was not entirely convinced of Blunt's performance...
Nonetheless and enjoyable action packed Sci-Fi movie and one I can recommend.

Comedy time!

Small Time Crooks (2000)
Comedy | Crime
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Time_Crooks
Image

A well written Woody Allen's comedy. It's been well performed, it's funny and all that and yet, I find it kind of forgettable. Camera is fairly boring and schematic. Music is atmospheric though. Recommended, after all.

To Rome with Love (2012)
Comedy | Romance
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Rome_w ... %28film%29
Image

Watch with subtitles on. At first I thought that they used Italian just for a couple of scenes for atmosphere but it turns out that whole threads are in this language. Speaking of atmosphere; the music, the sceneries and the filters on the camera match up greatly. The magical-realistic aspect of the film confused me at first but then I enjoyed it big time. Comedy is fueled by ludicrousness. Worth watching.

Neighbors (2014)
Comedy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighbors_%282014_film%29
Image

Here we go, another comedy produced by and starring Seth Rogen. Good writing, full of energy, fantastic acting. Concluded with a daft fighting scene. Definiately worth watching.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
Comedy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borat
Image

How the hell did the screenplay make it to the 20th Century Fox (not the Indie branch), I don't know. As you can probably imagine, this one is full to the brim with all sorts of stereotyping. It also gets graphic, quite often actually. If it didn't make me feel sick, I would probably be laughing. Performances believable; the entirety of cinematography atmospheric; dialogues awkward and silly (in a good way). As to recommendation, I'll say it's not for everyone.

A neat thriller not unlike "Bourne Identity" but with with less action.

However I enjoyed the ride and it did keep my attention.
Worth a watch...

Starring : Li Yu-Chun/Shawn Yue/Huang Xiaoming

Special Note : The movie is in Mandarin with English language sub-titles.

Once heavily favored by the Emperor, the Guillotines are deemed expendable once Emperor Qian Long ascends to the throne and adopts Western ideas and technology. To consolidate his power under a new regime, the Emperor continues to use the Guillotines to persecute the conquered Han Chinese in a reign of terror and oppression.

If you like martial arts combat with attitude....Bloody violence and interesting weapons of death then this is for you.
Personally I found it as tad average but then the sub-titles did not help...

An interesting concept.....but spoilt a tad by a rather vague storyline..

Awesome special effects as you might expect..But oh dear Hollywood needs to move on..

Belle

UK certificate 12
99 mins

Image

Genre : Drama

Directed by : Amma Asante

Starring : Gugu Mbatha-Raw/Tom Wilkinson/Miranda Richardson

<><><>

BELLE is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Captain. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar's son bent on change who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.

<><><>

A charming romantic period drama, well written and acted which takes you back to 1700s...
Solid performances keeps you engrossed...
If you are a fan of good drama then watch this.

8/10

Even bloody than previous outings if that's possible...
Trouble is the killings are becoming samey...
If you like the Wrong Turn series then you will like this...
Personally I am tired of the same old formula.
